Jeremiah 20:3 (NET) New English Translation

1 Now Pashhur son of Immer heard Jeremiah prophesy these things. He was the priest who was chief of security in the LORD's temple.
2 When he heard Jeremiah's prophecy, he had the prophet flogged. Then he put him in the stocks which were at the Upper Gate of Benjamin in the LORD's temple.
3 But the next day Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks. When he did, Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD's name for you is not 'Pashhur' but 'Terror is Everywhere.'
4 For the LORD says, 'I will make both you and your friends terrified of what will happen to you. You will see all of them die by the swords of their enemies. I will hand all the people of Judah over to the king of Babylon. He will carry some of them away into exile in Babylon and he will kill others of them with the sword.
5 I will hand over all the wealth of this city to their enemies. I will hand over to them all the fruits of the labor of the people of this city and all their prized possessions, as well as all the treasures of the kings of Judah. Their enemies will seize it all as plunder and carry it off to Babylon.
6 You, Pashhur, and all your household will go into exile in Babylon. You will die there and you will be buried there. The same thing will happen to all your friends to whom you have prophesied lies.'"
7 LORD, you coerced me into being a prophet, and I allowed you to do it. You overcame my resistance and prevailed over me. Now I have become a constant laughingstock. Everyone ridicules me.
8 For whenever I prophesy, I must cry out, "Violence and destruction are coming!" This message from the LORD has made me an object of continual insults and derision.
9 Sometimes I think, "I will make no mention of his message. I will not speak as his messenger any more." But then his message becomes like a fire locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul. I grow weary of trying to hold it in; I cannot contain it.
10 I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying, "Come on, let's publicly denounce him!" All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say, "Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.
11 But the LORD is with me to help me like an awe-inspiring warrior. Therefore those who persecute me will fail and will not prevail over me. They will be thoroughly disgraced because they did not succeed. Their disgrace will never be forgotten.
12 O LORD who rules over all, you test and prove the righteous. You see into people's hearts and minds. Pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause.
13 Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For he rescues the oppressed from the clutches of evildoers.
14 Cursed be the day I was born! May that day not be blessed when my mother gave birth to me.
15 Cursed be the man who made my father very glad when he brought him the news that a baby boy had been born to him!
16 May that man be like the cities that the LORD destroyed without showing any mercy. May he hear a cry of distress in the morning and a battle cry at noon.
17 For he did not kill me before I came from the womb, making my pregnant mother's womb my grave forever.
18 Why did I ever come forth from my mother's womb? All I experience is trouble and grief, and I spend my days in shame.

2 Then Pashur H6583 smote H5221 Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS him in H5921 PREP the stocks H4115 that H834 RPRO were in the high H5945 gate H8179 of Benjamin H1144 , which H834 RPRO was by the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
3 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS on the morrow H4283 , that Pashur H6583 brought forth W-VHY3MS Jeremiah H3414 out of H4480 PREP the stocks H4115 . Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Jeremiah H3414 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The LORD H3068 EDS hath not H3808 NADV called H7121 VQQ3MS thy name H8034 CMS-2MS Pashur H6583 , but H518 PART Magor H4036 - missabib .
4 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will make H5414 thee a terror H4032 to thyself , and to all H3605 NMS thy friends H157 : and they shall fall H5307 by the sword H2719 of their enemies H341 , and thine eyes H5869 shall behold H7200 it : and I will give H5414 VQY1MS all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , and he shall carry them captive H1540 into Babylon H894 , and shall slay H5221 them with the sword H2719 .
5 Moreover I will deliver H5414 all H3605 NMS the strength H2633 of this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , and all H3605 NMS the labors H3018 CMS-3FS thereof , and all H3605 NMS the precious things H3366 thereof , and all H3605 NMS the treasures H214 of the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 will I give H5414 VQY1MS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of their enemies H341 , which shall spoil H962 them , and take H3947 them , and carry H935 them to Babylon H894 .
6 And thou H859 PPRO-2FS , Pashur H6583 , and all H3605 W-CMS that dwell H3427 in thine house H1004 shall go H1980 into captivity H7628 : and thou shalt come H935 VQY2MS to Babylon H894 , and there H8033 W-ADV thou shalt die H4191 VQY2MS , and shalt be buried H6912 there H8033 W-ADV , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and all H3605 W-CMS thy friends H157 , to whom H834 RPRO thou hast prophesied H5012 lies H8267 .
7 O LORD H3068 EDS , thou hast deceived H6601 me , and I was deceived H6601 : thou art stronger H2388 than I , and hast prevailed H3201 : I am H1961 VQQ1MS in derision H7814 daily H3117 D-AMS , every one H3605 NMS mocketh H3932 me .
8 For H3588 CONJ since H1767 I spoke H1696 VPY1MS , I cried out H2199 , I cried H7121 violence H2555 AMS and spoil H7701 ; because H3588 CONJ the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was made H1961 VQQ3MS a reproach H2781 unto me , and a derision H7047 , daily H3117 D-NMS .
9 Then I said H559 W-VQQ1MS , I will not H3808 ADV make mention H2142 of him , nor H3808 ADV speak H1696 VPY1MS any more H5750 ADV in his name H8034 . But his word was H1961 W-VQQ3MS in mine heart H3820 as a burning H1197 fire H784 shut up H6113 in my bones H6106 , and I was weary H3811 with forbearing H3557 , and I could H3201 VQY1MS not H3808 W-NADV stay .
10 For H3588 CONJ I heard H8085 VQQ1MS the defaming H1681 of many H7227 AMP , fear H4032 on every side H5439 M-ADV . Report H5046 , say they , and we will report H5046 it . All H3605 NMS my familiars H7965 watched H8104 for my halting H6761 , saying , Peradventure H194 ADV he will be enticed H6601 , and we shall prevail H3201 against him , and we shall take H3947 our revenge H5360 on H4480 M-PREP-3MS him .
11 But the LORD H3068 W-EDS is with H854 me as a mighty H1368 terrible one H6184 : therefore H3651 ADV my persecutors H7291 shall stumble H3782 , and they shall not H3808 W-NPAR prevail H3201 : they shall be greatly H3966 ADV ashamed H954 ; for H3588 CONJ they shall not H3808 W-NPAR prosper H7919 : their everlasting H5769 NMS confusion H3639 shall never H3808 W-NPAR be forgotten H7911 .
12 But , O LORD H3068 W-EDS of hosts H6635 , that triest H974 the righteous H6662 AMS , and seest H7200 VQPMS the reins H3629 and the heart H3820 , let me see H7200 VQY1MS thy vengeance H5360 on H4480 them : for H3588 CONJ unto H413 PREP-2MS thee have I opened H1540 my cause H7379 CMS-1MS .
13 Sing H7891 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , praise H1984 ye the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ he hath delivered H5337 the soul H5315 GFS of the poor H34 from the hand H3027 M-GFS of evildoers H7489 VHPMP .
14 Cursed H779 VWQ3MS be the day H3117 NUM-MS wherein H834 RPRO I was born H3205 : let not H408 NPAR the day H3117 NMS wherein H834 RPRO my mother H517 CFS-1MS bore H3205 me be H1961 VPY3MS blessed H1288 .
15 Cursed H779 VWQ3MS be the man H376 D-NMS who H834 RPRO brought tidings H1319 to my father H1 CMS-1MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , A man H2145 NMS child H1121 NMS is born H3205 unto thee ; making him very glad H8055 .
16 And let that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS man H376 D-NMS be H1961 W-VQQ3MS as the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS overthrew H2015 VQQ3MS , and repented H5162 not H3808 W-NPAR : and let him hear H8085 the cry H2201 in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and the shouting H8643 at noontide H6256 ;
17 Because H834 RPRO he slew H4191 me not H3808 NADV from the womb H7358 ; or that my mother H517 CFS-1MS might have been H1961 W-VQY3FS my grave H6913 , and her womb H7358 to be always H5769 NMS great H2030 with me .
18 Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO came I forth H3318 VQPFS-1MS out of the womb H7358 M-NMS to see H7200 L-VQFC labor H5999 NMS and sorrow H3015 , that my days H3117 CMP-1MS should be consumed H3615 W-VQY3MP with shame H1322 ?
