Isaiah 24:16 (NET) New English Translation

1 Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
2 Everyone will suffer— the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.
3 The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.
4 The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away.
5 The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.
6 So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.
7 The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.
8 The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.
9 They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
10 The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.
11 They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble.
13 This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest.
14 They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west.
15 So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs— the Just One is majestic. But I say, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!"
17 Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth!
18 The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently.
20 The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again.
21 At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth.
22 They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished.
23 The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor.

2 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , as with the people H5971 , so with the priest H3548 ; as with the servant H5650 , so with his master H113 ; as with the maid H8198 , so with her mistress H1404 ; as with the buyer H7069 , so with the seller H4376 ; as with the lender H3867 , so with the borrower H3867 ; as with the taker of usury H5383 , so H834 K-RPRO with the giver of usury H5378 to him .
3 The land H776 D-GFS shall be utterly emptied H1238 , and utterly spoiled H962 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS word H1697 D-NMS .
4 The earth H776 D-GFS mourneth H56 and fadeth away H5034 , the world H8398 NFS languisheth H535 and fadeth away H5034 , the haughty H4791 people H5971 NMS of the earth H776 D-GFS do languish H535 .
5 The earth H776 WD-GFS also is defiled H2610 under H8478 NMS the inhabitants H3427 thereof ; because H3588 CONJ they have transgressed H5674 VQQ3MP the laws H8451 , changed H2498 VQQ3MP the ordinance H2706 NMS , broken H6565 the everlasting H5769 NMS covenant H1285 NFS .
6 Therefore H5921 PREP hath the curse H423 devoured H398 VQQ3FS the earth H776 GFS , and they that dwell H3427 therein are desolate H816 : therefore H3651 ADV the inhabitants H3427 of the earth H776 GFS are burned H2787 , and few H4213 men H582 NMS left H7604 .
7 The new wine H8492 mourneth H56 , the vine H1612 languisheth H535 , all H3605 NMS the merryhearted H8056 do sigh H584 .
8 The mirth H4885 CMS of tabrets H8596 ceaseth H7673 VQQ3MS , the noise H7588 of them that rejoice H5947 endeth H2308 , the joy H4885 CMS of the harp H3658 ceaseth H7673 VQQ3MS .
9 They shall not H3808 NADV drink H8354 wine H3196 with a song H7892 ; strong drink H7941 shall be bitter H4843 to them that drink H8354 it .
10 The city H7151 of confusion H8414 NMS is broken down H7665 : every H3605 NMS house H1004 NMS is shut up H5462 , that no man may come in .
11 There is a crying H6682 for H5921 PREP wine H3196 D-NMS in the streets H2351 ; all H3605 NMS joy H8057 is darkened H6150 , the mirth H4885 CMS of the land H776 D-GFS is gone H1540 .
12 In the city H5892 BD-NFS is left H7604 VNQ3MS desolation H8047 , and the gate H8179 is smitten H3807 with destruction H7591 .
13 When H3588 CONJ thus H3541 it shall be H1961 VQY3MS in the midst H7130 of the land H776 D-GFS among H8432 B-NMS the people H5971 , there shall be as the shaking H5363 of an olive tree H2132 NMS , and as the gleaning grapes H5955 when H518 PART the vintage H1210 is done H3615 VQQ3MS .
14 They H1992 PPRO-3MP shall lift up H5375 VQY3MP their voice H6963 CMS-3MP , they shall sing H7442 for the majesty H1347 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , they shall cry aloud H6670 from the sea H3220 .
15 Wherefore H5921 PREP glorify H3513 ye the LORD H3068 EDS in the fires H217 , even the name H8034 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 LMS in the isles H339 of the sea H3220 D-NMS .
16 From the uttermost part H3671 of the earth H776 D-GFS have we heard H8085 VQQ1MP songs H2158 , even glory H6643 to the righteous H6662 . But I said H559 W-VQY1MS , My leanness H7334 , my leanness H7334 , woe H188 unto me ! the treacherous dealers H898 have dealt treacherously H898 ; yea , the treacherous dealers H898 have dealt very treacherously H898 .
17 Fear H6343 NMS , and the pit H6354 , and the snare H6341 , are upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , O inhabitant H3427 VQPMS of the earth H776 D-GFS .
18 And it shall come to pass H1961 , that he who fleeth H5127 from the noise H6963 of the fear H6343 shall fall H5307 VQY3MS into H413 PREP the pit H6354 ; and he that cometh up H5927 out of the midst H8432 of the pit H6354 shall be taken H3920 in the snare H6341 : for H3588 CONJ the windows H699 from on high H4791 are open H6605 , and the foundations H4146 of the earth H776 GFS do shake H7493 .
19 The earth H776 D-GFS is utterly broken down H7489 , the earth H776 GFS is clean dissolved H6565 , the earth H776 GFS is moved exceedingly H4131 .
20 The earth H776 GFS shall reel to and fro H5128 like a drunkard H7910 , and shall be removed H5110 like a cottage H4412 ; and the transgression H6588 thereof shall be heavy H3513 upon H5921 PREP-3FS it ; and it shall fall H5307 , and not H3808 W-NPAR rise H6965 again H3254 VHY2MS .
21 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , that the LORD H3068 EDS shall punish H6485 VQY3MS the host H6635 of the high ones H4791 that are on high H4791 BD-NMS , and the kings H4428 CMP of the earth H127 D-NFS upon H5921 PREP the earth H127 D-NFS .
22 And they shall be gathered together H622 , as prisoners H616 are gathered H626 in H5921 PREP the pit H953 , and shall be shut up H5462 in H5921 PREP the prison H4525 , and after many H7230 days H3117 NMP shall they be visited H6485 .
23 Then the moon H3842 shall be confounded H2659 , and the sun H2535 ashamed H954 , when H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 shall reign H4427 in mount H2022 Zion H6726 , and in Jerusalem H3389 , and before H5048 his ancients H2205 gloriously H3519 .
