2 Kings 7:12 (NET) New English Translation

1 Elisha replied, "Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the LORD says, 'About this time tomorrow a seah of finely milled flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.'"
2 An officer who was the king's right-hand man responded to the prophet, "Look, even if the LORD made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?" Elisha said, "Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!"
3 Now four men with a skin disease were sitting at the entrance of the city gate. They said to one another, "Why are we just sitting here waiting to die?
4 If we go into the city, we'll die of starvation, and if we stay here we'll die! So come on, let's defect to the Syrian camp! If they spare us, we'll live; if they kill us— well, we were going to die anyway."
5 So they started toward the Syrian camp at dusk. When they reached the edge of the Syrian camp, there was no one there.
6 The LORD had caused the Syrian camp to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a large army. Then they said to one another, "Look, the king of Israel has paid the kings of the Hittites and Egypt to attack us!"
7 So they got up and fled at dusk, leaving behind their tents, horses, and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.
8 When the men with a skin disease reached the edge of the camp, they entered a tent and had a meal. They also took some silver, gold, and clothes and went and hid it all. Then they went back and entered another tent. They looted it and went and hid what they had taken.
9 Then they said to one another, "It's not right what we're doing! This is a day to celebrate, but we haven't told anyone. If we wait until dawn, we'll be punished. So come on, let's go and inform the royal palace."
10 So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city. They told them, "We entered the Syrian camp and there was no one there. We didn't even hear a man's voice. But the horses and donkeys are still tied up, and the tents remain up."
11 The gatekeepers relayed the news to the royal palace.
12 The king got up in the night and said to his advisers, "I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know we are starving, so they left the camp and hid in the field, thinking, 'When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and enter the city.'"
13 One of his advisers replied, "Pick some men and have them take five of the horses that are left in the city. (Even if they are killed, their fate will be no different than that of all the Israelite people— we're all going to die!) Let's send them out so we can know for sure what's going on."
14 So they picked two horsemen and the king sent them out to track the Syrian army. He ordered them, "Go and find out what's going on."
15 So they tracked them as far as the Jordan. The road was filled with clothes and equipment that the Syrians had discarded in their haste. The scouts went back and told the king.
16 Then the people went out and looted the Syrian camp. A seah of finely milled flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, just as the LORD had said they would.
17 Now the king had placed the officer who was his right-hand man at the city gate. When the people rushed out, they trampled him to death in the gate. This fulfilled the prophet's word which he had spoken when the king tried to arrest him.
18 The prophet told the king, "Two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel, and a seah of finely milled flour for a shekel; this will happen about this time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria."
19 But the officer replied to the prophet, "Look, even if the LORD made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?" Elisha said, "Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!"
20 This is exactly what happened to him. The people trampled him to death in the city gate.

2 Then a lord H7991 on H5921 PREP whose H834 RPRO hand H3027 CFS-3MS the king H4428 leaned H8172 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , if the LORD H3068 EDS would make H6213 VQPMS windows H699 in heaven H8064 BD-NMP , might this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS be H1961 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , thou shalt see H7200 VQPMS it with thine eyes H5869 , but shalt not H3808 NADV eat H398 thereof H8033 WM-ADV .
3 And there were H1961 VQQ3MP four H702 leprous H6879 men H376 NMS at the entering in H6607 CMS of the gate H8179 : and they said H559 one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H7453 NMS-3MS , Why H4100 IGAT sit H3427 we H587 PPRO-1MP here H6311 ADV until H5704 PREP we die H4191 ?
4 If H518 PART we say H559 , We will enter H935 VNQ3MS into the city H5892 D-GFS , then the famine H7458 is in the city H5892 BD-NFS , and we shall die H4191 there H8033 ADV : and if H518 PART we sit H3427 still here H6311 , we die H4191 also . Now H6258 W-ADV therefore come H1980 VQI2MP , and let us fall H5307 unto H413 PREP the host H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS : if H518 PART they save us alive H2421 , we shall live H2421 ; and if H518 PART they kill H4191 us , we shall but die H4191 .
5 And they rose up H6965 in the twilight H5399 , to go H935 L-VQFC unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS : and when they were come H935 W-VQY3MP to H5704 PREP the uttermost part H7097 of the camp H4264 of Syria H758 EMS , behold H2009 IJEC , there was no H369 ADV man H376 NMS there H8033 ADV .
6 For the Lord H136 had made the host H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS to hear H8085 a noise H6963 CMS of chariots H7393 , and a noise H6963 CMS of horses H5483 , even the noise H6963 CMS of a great H1419 AMS host H2428 NMS : and they said H559 W-VQY3MP one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H251 CMS-3MS , Lo H2009 IJEC , the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 hath hired H7936 against H5921 PREP-1MP us the kings H4428 NMS of the Hittites H2850 , and the kings H4428 NMS of the Egyptians H4714 EFS , to come H935 L-VQFC upon H5921 us .
7 Wherefore they arose H6965 and fled H5127 in the twilight H5399 , and left H5800 their tents H168 , and their horses H5483 , and their asses H2543 , even the camp H4264 as H834 K-RPRO it H1931 PPRO-3FS was , and fled H5127 W-VQY3MP for H413 PREP their life H5315 .

9 Then they said H559 W-VQY3MP one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H7453 NMS-3MS , We H587 PPRO-1MP do H6213 not H3808 ADV well H3651 ADV : this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 NUM-MS is a day H3117 NMS of good tidings H1309 , and we H587 hold our peace H2814 : if we tarry H2442 till H5704 PREP the morning H1242 light H216 NMS , some mischief H5771 will come upon H4672 us : now H6258 W-ADV therefore come H1980 VQI2MP , that we may go H935 and tell H5046 the king H4428 \'s household H1004 CMS .
10 So they came H935 W-VQY3MP and called H7121 unto H413 PREP the porter H7778 of the city H5892 D-GFS : and they told H5046 them , saying H559 L-VQFC , We came H935 to H413 PREP the camp H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS , and , behold H2009 IJEC , there was no H369 ADV man H376 NMS there H8033 ADV , neither voice H6963 W-CMS of man H120 NMS , but H518 PART horses H5483 tied H631 , and asses H2543 tied H631 , and the tents H168 as H834 K-RPRO they H1992 were .
11 And he called H7121 W-VQY3MS the porters H7778 ; and they told H5046 it to the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS within H6441 .
12 And the king H4428 D-NMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS in the night H3915 GMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his servants H5650 , I will now H4994 IJEC show H5046 you what H834 RPRO the Syrians H758 EMS have done H6213 VQQ3MP to us . They know H3045 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ we H587 PPRO-1MP be hungry H7457 ; therefore are they gone out H3318 W-VQY3MP of H4480 PREP the camp H4264 to hide themselves H2247 in the field H7704 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , When H3588 CONJ they come out H3318 of H4480 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS , we shall catch H8610 them alive H2416 NMP , and get H935 into H413 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS .
13 And one H259 MMS of his servants H5650 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let some take H3947 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , five H2568 of H4480 PREP the horses H5483 that remain H7604 , which H834 RPRO are left H7604 in the city H2009 , ( behold H2009 , they are as all H3605 the multitude H1995 of Israel H3478 that H834 RPRO are left H7604 in it : behold H2009 , I say , they are even as all H3605 the multitude H1995 of the Israelites H3478 that H834 RPRO are consumed H8552 : ) and let us send H7971 and see H7200 .
14 They took H3947 W-VQY3MP therefore two H8147 ONUM chariot H7393 horses H5483 ; and the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP the host H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Go H1980 VQI2MP and see H7200 .
15 And they went H1980 W-VQY3MP after H310 them unto H5704 PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS : and , lo H2009 IJEC , all H3605 CMS the way H1870 D-NMS was full H4392 of garments H899 and vessels H3627 , which H834 RPRO the Syrians H758 EMS had cast away H7993 in their haste H2648 . And the messengers H4397 returned H7725 W-VUY3MP , and told H5046 the king H4428 .
16 And the people H5971 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS , and spoiled H962 the tents H4264 of the Syrians H758 EMS . So a measure H5429 of fine flour H5560 was H1961 W-VQY3MS sold for a shekel H8255 , and two measures H5429 of barley H8184 for a shekel H8255 , according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
17 And the king H4428 appointed H6485 the lord H7991 on H5921 PREP whose H834 RPRO hand H3027 CFS-3MS he leaned H8172 to have the charge of H5921 PREP the gate H8179 : and the people H5971 trod upon H7429 him in the gate H8179 , and he died H4191 , as H834 RPRO the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP had said H1696 VPQ3MS , who H834 RPRO spoke H1696 VPQ3MS when the king H4428 D-NMS came down H3381 to H413 him .
18 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS as the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP had spoken H1696 K-VPFC to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Two measures H5429 of barley H8184 for a shekel H8255 , and a measure H5429 of fine flour H5560 for a shekel H8255 , shall be H1961 VQY3MS tomorrow H4279 NMS about this time H6256 KD-NMS in the gate H8179 of Samaria H8111 :
19 And that lord H7991 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Now , behold H2009 IJEC , if the LORD H3068 EDS should make H6213 VQPMS windows H699 in heaven H8064 BD-NMP , might such H2088 D-PMS a thing H1697 be H1961 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , thou shalt see H7200 VQPMS it with thine eyes H5869 , but shalt not H3808 NADV eat H398 thereof H8033 WM-ADV .
20 And so H3651 ADV it fell out H1961 W-VQY3MS unto him : for the people H5971 trod upon H7429 him in the gate H8179 , and he died H4191 W-VQY3MS .
