2 Samuel 24 (NET) New English Translation

1 The LORD's anger again raged against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go count Israel and Judah."
2 The king told Joab, the general in command of his army, "Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba and muster the army, so I may know the size of the army."
3 Joab replied to the king, "May the LORD your God make the army a hundred times larger right before the eyes of my lord the king! But why does my master the king want to do this?"
4 But the king's edict stood, despite the objections of Joab and the leaders of the army. So Joab and the leaders of the army left the king's presence in order to muster the Israelite army.
5 They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, on the south side of the city, at the wadi of Gad, near Jazer.
6 Then they went on to Gilead and to the region of Tahtim Hodshi, coming to Dan Jaan and on around to Sidon.
7 Then they went to the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went on to the Negev of Judah, to Beer Sheba.
8 They went through all the land and after nine months and twenty days came back to Jerusalem.
9 Joab reported the number of warriors to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 sword-wielding warriors, and in Judah there were 500,000 soldiers.
10 David felt guilty after he had numbered the army. David said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, O LORD, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly."
11 When David got up the next morning, the LORD had already spoken to Gad the prophet, David's seer:
12 "Go, tell David, 'This is what the LORD says: I am offering you three forms of judgment. Pick one of them and I will carry it out against you.'"
13 Gad went to David and told him, "Shall seven years of famine come upon your land? Or shall you flee for three months from your enemy with him in hot pursuit? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now decide what I should tell the one who sent me."
14 David said to Gad, "I am very upset! I prefer that we be attacked by the LORD, for his mercy is great; I do not want to be attacked by men!"
15 So the LORD sent a plague through Israel from the morning until the completion of the appointed time. Seventy thousand men died from Dan to Beer Sheba.
16 When the angel extended his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from his judgment. He told the angel who was killing the people, "That's enough! Stop now!" (Now the LORD's angel was near the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.)
17 When he saw the angel who was destroying the people, David said to the LORD, "Look, it is I who have sinned and done this evil thing! As for these sheep— what have they done? Attack me and my family."
18 So Gad went to David that day and told him, "Go up and build an altar for the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
19 So David went up as Gad instructed him to do, according to the LORD's instructions.
20 When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants approaching him, he went out and bowed to the king with his face to the ground.
21 Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy from you the threshing floor so I can build an altar for the LORD, so that the plague may be removed from the people."
22 Araunah told David, "My lord the king may take whatever he wishes and offer it. Look! Here are oxen for burnt offerings, and threshing sledges and harnesses for wood.
23 I, the servant of my lord the king, give it all to the king!" Araunah also told the king, "May the LORD your God show you favor!"
24 But the king said to Araunah, "No, I insist on buying it from you! I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt sacrifices that cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty pieces of silver.
25 Then David built an altar for the LORD there and offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings. And the LORD accepted prayers for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.

2 For the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 the captain H8269 of the host H2428 , which H834 RPRO was with H854 PREP-3MS him , Go H7751 now H4994 IJEC through all H3605 B-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , from Dan H1835 even to H5704 W-PREP Beer H884 - sheba , and number H6485 ye the people H5971 , that I may know H3045 the number H4557 CMS of the people H5971 D-NMS .
3 And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Now the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS add H3254 unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , how many soever they be a hundredfold H3967 MFS , and that the eyes H5869 W-CMD of my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS may see H7200 it : but why H4100 L-IPRO doth my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS delight H2654 in this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 ?
4 Notwithstanding the king H4428 D-NMS \'s word H1697 CMS prevailed H2388 against H413 PREP Joab H3097 , and against H5921 W-PREP the captains H8269 CMP of the host H2428 . And Joab H3097 and the captains H8269 of the host H2428 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS from the presence H6440 L-CMP of the king H4428 D-NMS , to number H6485 the people H5971 of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 And they passed over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and pitched H2583 W-VQY3MP in Aroer H6177 , on the right side H3225 of the city H5892 D-GFS that H834 RPRO lieth in the midst H8432 B-NMS of the river H5158 of Gad H1410 , and toward H413 W-PREP Jazer H3270 :
6 Then they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Gilead H1568 , and to H413 PREP the land H776 GFS of Tahtim H8483 - hodshi ; and they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Dan H1842 - jaan , and about H5439 to H413 PREP Zidon H6721 ,
7 And came H935 W-VQY3MP to the stronghold H4013 of Tyre H6865 , and to all H3605 W-CMS the cities H5892 of the Hivites H2340 , and of the Canaanites H3669 WD-EMS : and they went out H3318 to PREP the PREP south H5045 of Judah H3063 , even to Beer H884 - sheba .
8 So when they had gone H7751 through all H3605 B-CMS the land H776 D-GFS , they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Jerusalem H3389 at the end H7097 M-CMS of nine H8672 months H2320 and twenty H6242 W-MMP days H3117 NMS .
9 And Joab H3097 gave up H5414 W-VQQ3MS the sum H4557 CMS of the number H4662 of the people H5971 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS : and there were H1961 W-VQY3FS in Israel H3478 eight H8083 MFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS valiant H2428 NMS men H376 NMS that drew H8025 the sword H2719 GFS ; and the men H376 W-NMS of Judah H3063 were five H2568 BFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS .
10 And David H1732 MMS \'s heart H3820 NMS smote H5221 W-VHY3MS him after H310 PREP that H3651 ADV he had numbered H5608 the people H5971 . And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , I have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS greatly H3966 ADV in that H834 RPRO I have done H6213 VQQ1MS : and now H6258 W-ADV , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , O LORD H3068 EDS , take away H5674 the iniquity H5771 of thy servant H5650 ; for H3588 CONJ I have done very H3966 ADV foolishly H5528 .
11 For when David H1732 MMS was up H6965 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 B-NMS , the word H1697 W-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP the prophet H5030 Gad H1410 , David H1732 \'s seer H2374 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
12 Go H1980 VQFA and say H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Thus H3541 saith H1696 the LORD H3068 EDS , I H595 PPRO-1MS offer H5190 thee three H7969 MFS things ; choose H977 thee one H259 of H4480 them , that I H6213 may do H6213 it unto thee .
13 So Gad H1410 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , and told H5046 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Shall seven H7651 years H8141 NFP of famine H7458 NMS come H935 unto thee in thy land H776 ? or H518 PART wilt thou flee H5127 three H7969 NFS months H2320 before H6440 thine enemies H6862 CMP-2MS , while they H1931 W-PPRO-3MS pursue H7291 thee ? or H518 PART that there be H1961 VQFC three H7969 NFS days H3117 NMP \' pestilence H1698 in thy land H776 ? now H6258 ADV advise H3045 , and see H7200 W-VQI2MS what H4100 IGAT answer H1697 I shall return H7725 to him that sent H7971 me .
14 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Gad H1410 , I am in a great H3966 ADV strait H6862 AMS : let us fall H5307 now H4994 IJEC into the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 EDS ; for H3588 CONJ his mercies H7356 are great H7227 AMP : and let me not H408 NPAR fall H5307 into the hand H3027 of man H120 NMS .
15 So the LORD H3068 EDS sent H5414 W-VQQ3MS a pestilence H1698 upon Israel H3478 from the morning H1242 even to H5704 W-PREP the time H6256 NMS appointed H4150 NMS : and there died H4191 W-VQY3MS of H4480 PREP the people H5971 from Dan H1835 even to H5704 W-PREP Beer H884 - sheba seventy H7657 ONUM thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS .
16 And when the angel H4397 stretched out H7971 W-VQY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS upon Jerusalem H3389 to destroy H7843 it , the LORD H3068 EDS repented him H5162 W-VNY3MS of H413 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS to the angel H4397 that destroyed H7843 the people H5971 , It is enough H7227 AMS : stay H7503 now H6258 ADV thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS . And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 VQQ3MS by H5973 PREP the threshingplace H1637 of Araunah H728 the Jebusite H2983 .
17 And David H1732 MMS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS when he saw H7200 the angel H4397 that smote H5221 the people H5971 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Lo H2009 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS have done wickedly H5753 VHQ1MS : but these H428 W-PMP sheep H6629 , what H4100 IPRO have they done H6213 VQQ3MP ? let thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , be H1961 VQI3FS against me , and against my father H1 \'s house H1004 .
18 And Gad H1410 came H935 W-VQY3MS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Go up H5927 , rear H6965 an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS in the threshingfloor H1637 of Araunah H728 the Jebusite H2983 .
19 And David H1732 MMS , according to the saying H1697 K-NMS of Gad H1410 , went up H5927 W-VHY3MS as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS .
20 And Araunah H728 looked H8259 , and saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS and his servants H5650 coming on H5674 toward H5921 PREP-3MS him : and Araunah H728 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS , and bowed himself H7812 before the king H4428 on his face H639 upon the ground H776 NFS-3FS .
21 And Araunah H728 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4069 IPRO is my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS come H935 VQPMS to H413 PREP his servant H5650 ? And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , To buy H7069 the threshingfloor H1637 of thee , to build H1129 an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , that the plague H4046 may be stayed H6113 from M-PREP the people H5971 D-NMS .
22 And Araunah H728 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Let my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS take H3947 and offer up H5927 what seemeth good H2896 D-NMS unto him H5869 : behold H7200 VQI2MS , here be oxen H1241 D-NMS for burnt sacrifice H5930 , and threshing instruments H4173 and other instruments H3627 of the oxen H1241 D-NMS for wood H6086 .
23 All H3605 these things did Araunah H728 , as a king H4428 D-NMS , give H5414 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 . And Araunah H728 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the king H4428 D-NMS , The LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS accept H7521 thee .
24 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Araunah H728 , Nay H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ I will surely buy H7069 it of thee at a price H4242 : neither H3808 W-NADV will I offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 CFP unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS my God H430 of that which H834 doth cost me nothing H2600 ADV . So David H1732 MMS bought H7069 the threshingfloor H1637 and the oxen H1241 D-NMS for fifty H2572 shekels H8255 of silver H3701 .
25 And David H1732 MMS built H1129 W-VQY3MS there H8033 ADV an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and offered H5927 W-VHY3MS burnt offerings H5930 CFP and peace offerings H8002 . So the LORD H3068 EDS was entreated H6279 for the land H776 LD-NFS , and the plague H4046 was stayed H6113 from M-PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
